SA’s four largest civil construction and demolition companies make it to the top 50 in the state’s annual countdown of top 100 companies Dainik Jagran South Australian Business Index 2022 – The state’s definitive guide to our most successful companies.

This segment of the ranking for 2022 includes McMahon Services followed by Ahrens Group, Baez and Donlin Pte, known as the Sarah Group.
Revenue this year returned to normal after fiscal 2011, yet it has been a difficult period, according to the latest data gathered for the index by Adelaide financial services firm Taylor Collison.
Construction was booming across the state with government-backed infrastructure support and increased economic activity from earlier in the year, but at the end of the fiscal period, supply issues and rising material costs escalated.
This primarily affects large home builders dealing with fixed price contracts as the increased project delivery cost eats into the profit margin. Taylor Collison said at least 15 builders entered administration across Australia in the second half of fiscal 2012.
In SA, major construction companies were able to maintain their strong position on the index with strong balance sheets, tenure strength and diversified operations.
Higher yields and strong livestock demand from international and domestic markets also saw the agriculture sector bode well. In this segment, family ranchers AJ and PA McBride moved up five places in the rankings to be ranked 39th with $41 million in revenue.
Agricultural asset manager Duxton Water was listed at 40 and Renmark-based producer cooperative AlmondCo was in the mix with its wool exports along with the family-owned Mitchell Group of companies.
Nourizer Ltd. is an innovative company that produces carbon-neutral urea fertilizer – the building block of crop production worldwide. It moved up 23 places to 44 on the list.
Global markets also shook the automotive industry with supply chain problems such as factory shortages, forcing manufacturers such as Ford to stop production. At the same time, demand for new cars, especially for 4x4s and workplaces, skyrocketed as the state experienced an increase in local spending and local vacations.
While supply issues disappointed car dealers, higher prices still led to revenue growth, with Ellis Car Center Pvt Ltd (Peter Kittel) at four locations – 41 – listed above.
Independent Pub Group Holdings Private Limited (GM Hotels) now has a portfolio of 11 hotel venues across the state. The Emu Hotel’s recent sale of $32 million is the largest ever for a single Adelaide pub.
Its portfolio includes Pier Glenelg, Tower Hotel in Norwood, Whitehorse Tavern and The Rosie in the Adelaide CBD. The group also manages the Republic Norwood.
Meanwhile, Thomson Greer has established itself as a leading national law firm and one of the largest originators in South Australia. After expanding aggressively over the past 10 years it now employs 560 employees and 137 partners across Australia.
Defense, engineering services and technology solutions company Nova Systems, and SAGE Group, with revenue of $346 million, among others in this segment of the list, is up 11 places at 46.
