
A total of 3,41,302 passenger vehicles were sold in India last month, an increase of 49,838 units (17.10 per cent) on a year-on-year basis compared to July 2021, when 2,91,464 vehicles got home.
The MoM numbers for July were also in the black, an increase of 20,456 units (6.38 per cent) as compared to the 3,20,846 cars and SUVs that got home in June 2022.

Let’s take a look at 10 bestselling car brands from July 2022 and see how they fared…

1) Maruti Suzuki – 1,42,850 units
Maruti dominated the Indian car market by overtaking the next three car makers in this list. Maruti’s sales grew by 6.82 per cent (9,118 units) on a year-on-year basis as compared to 1,33,732 units in July 2021. MoM sales grew by 16.44 per cent (20,165 units) as compared to June’s 1,22,685 units.

2) Hyundai – 50,500 units
Hyundai continued to keep Tata Motors at bay as it claimed the second spot on the list for the second consecutive month with the South Korean carmaker shipping 50,500 units in July. There was a year-on-year increase of 2,458 units (5.12 per cent) in sales compared to the same period last year, when 48,042 units were found. MoM sales grew by 3.06 per cent (or 1,499 units) as compared to 49,001 units in June 2022.

3) Tata Motors – 47,505 units
In July, Tata Motors set a new record for domestic car sales, with 47,505 units finding new homes last month. Tata’s YoY sales numbers increased by 57.38 per cent (17,320 units) as compared to July 2021, when it sold 30,185 cars. MoM metrics were also in the black with an increase of 5.11 per cent (2,308 units) as compared to 45,197 units in June 2022.

4) Mahindra – 28,053 units
Mahindra sold a total of 28,053 cars in July 2022, an increase of 33.29 per cent (7,000 units) over the same period last year, when it sold only 21,046 units. MoM’s sales numbers grew by 4.36 per cent (1,173 units) over the previous month, when Mahindra sold a total of 26,880 units.

5) Kia – 22,022 units
Kia enjoyed another month of good sales in July 2022 selling 22,022 utility vehicles in the country. The YoY numbers grew by 46.66 per cent (7,006 units) as compared to 15,016 units in July 2021. The MoM numbers were however in the red, a decline of 8.33 per cent (2,002 units).

6) Toyota – 9,693 units
Japanese carmaker Toyota sold a total of 9,693 cars in the month of July ’22. There was an increase of 6,558 units (50.27 per vent) in annual sales compared to the same period last year, when 13,105 units were sold. MoM metrics were also up 19.26 per cent (3,181 units) as compared to 16,512 units in the previous month.

7) Renault – 7,128 units
French carmaker Renault did not have a pleasant July as both the YoY and MoM metrics ended in the red. YoY metrics were down 27.17 per cent (2,659 units) as compared to 9,787 units in July 2021. The MoM metrics was down at 2,189 units or 23.49 per cent as against 9,317 units in June.

8) Honda – 6,784 units
Honda claimed the 8th spot in the list by selling 6,784 cars in July 2022. Honda’s YoY numbers grew 12.04 per cent (729 units) compared to 6,055 units sold in the same period last year. On the other hand, the MoM metrics were lower by 13.40 per cent (1,050 units) as compared to June 2022, when 7,834 Honda cars were sold.

9) Skoda – 4,447 Units
Czech carmaker Skoda sold 4,447 cars in the month of July. This was an increase of 44.38 per cent (1,367 units) in sales compared to the same period in 2021, when 3,080 koda cars found new homes. However, Mo-oM metrics were in the red with a decline of 26.17 per cent (1,576 units) as compared to June’s 6,023 units.

10) MG- 4,013 units
Chinese-owned British carmaker MG shipped 4,013 vehicles to customers last month. MG’s YoY metrics were lower by 5.02 per cent (212 units) as compared to 4,225 units in July 2022. MoM metrics were also in the red, a decline of 10.88 per cent (490 units) as compared to 4,503 units in June 2022.

Thoughts on July Car Sales
Compared to July 2021, car sales rose again in July with every carmaker except Renault, MG and Nissan. The MoM metrics have been rising steadily which shows that the Indian car market is slowly but surely returning to normalcy.
