In an effort to develop further, the NCAA announced that it is adding new transfer rules for college athletes.
For fall sports, including college football, the NCAA added a window for transfer from May 1–15, or a 45-day window “the day after the championship selection in their sport”. The same goes for the spring games, instead of the dates of May they are December 1-15.
For winter sports, such as college basketball, the NCAA adds a window of 60 days after the championship is selected.
Additionally, the NCAA has added new rules for players on teams that experience a head coach change and for student athletes who wish to be eligible immediately but are not covered under the outright exemption exception rule. Students will also have to keep their financial aid through to graduation if they decide to move schools, no matter where they go.
One area the NCAA didn’t address is having athletes move multiple times and qualify immediately each time.
“Like their peers in the general student population, college athletes choose to transfer for any number of reasons,” Joe Morehead, president and board of directors of the University of Georgia, said in a statement. “We believe that the changes implemented today will enable member schools to adapt to the needs of students, while also preparing students for long-term academic success. These changes to the NCAA rules recognize that immediate eligibility Further study on graduation rates is needed before multiple relocation opportunities can be authorised. We will continue to review potential amendments to transfer rules as the scenario evolves over time.”
These transfer rules should give college athletes even more flexibility if they are considering transferring from their current schools. For the NCAA, the organization is hoping that these windows can make life easier for students who want to transfer.
