Cali, Colombia – University of Cincinnati Track and Field Freshman Steven McElroy Finished second with a time of 45.65 seconds to finish second in the men’s 400m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali22. The Finnish was the fastest of their meeting and the third fastest as a Bearcat.
In the semi-finals, McElroy improved on his opening mark, passing 45.67 to finish second in heat three and automatic qualification to the final. On Tuesday, the freshman clocked a time of 46.38 in the preliminaries to top his heats to advance.
Based on his finish at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships in Eugene, McElroy will also compete in the first round of the men’s 4x400m relay on Friday at 12:15 p.m. ET.
The World Athletics U20 Championships is a biennial international competition that provides the world with an opportunity to see the future stars of the sport emerge on the global stage. This year’s event will continue from the Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium until Saturday, August 6.
World Athletics will resume live streaming on YouTube and Facebook channels while select events will be broadcast on Peacock and CNBC.
In Eugene, the Pickerington, Ohio native ran a meet-record time of 44.93 seconds to qualify for the World Athletics U20 Championships. The school record holder has gone from 47.86 to 44.93 during the 2021–22 season. As a freshman, McElroy won the 400-meter title at both the American Athletic Conference indoor and outdoor championships, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
