Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci had a candid conversation about knowing what it meant to be gay when Ricci was just 9 years old and working with Depp’s then-girlfriend, Winona Ryder, on the ’90s classic, “Mermaids.” was doing.
The “Yellowjackets” star recalled a conversation with Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM’s “Radio Andy” show, and later working with Depp on “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”.
“Johnny [Depp] is actually the person who told me what homosexuality was when I was 9,” she said.

Cohen asked, “Really? And how did it come about and how did he explain it?”
“Something was going on on the set and nobody was doing well with anyone else,” Ricci said. “And they were like, ‘Oh, he might be homophobic.’ And then I was like, ‘Well, I don’t understand what that is.’ And, and I was in Winona [Ryder] trailer, and she was like, ‘I don’t know how…’ So, she put me on the phone with Johnny. And Johnny explained it to me.”
Depp and Ryder began dating in 1990 and got engaged after a few months of dating, but ended their tumultuous relationship for good in 1993.
Bravo’s patriarch was stunned, and said, “It’s unbelievable.”

“Yeah, and like the simplest words,” she said. “He was like, ‘This is when a man wants to have sex with a man and when a woman wants to have sex with a woman,’ and I was like, ‘Ah, okay.'”
Cohen looked confused as he tried to clarify, “It’s been years after you’ve been in ‘The Addams Family.’ You’ve slept in Cher. You’re just figuring out what a gay man is? “
“So, no, it’s on the set of ‘Mermaids.’ When I was 9 years old. My first film set,” she said.
“Mermaids” was based on Patty Dann’s 1986 novel and was Ricci’s debut. He also starred alongside Cher and Bob Hoskins.

“I thought it was on the set of ‘Fear and Hate in Las Vegas.’ I’m like…” Cohen joked before Rikki said: “No, that would have been totally crazy.”
Cohen thought it was “so sweet” of Depp, explaining it “nicely”, with Ricci reassuring him that everything was “really important, like I just did.”
“I love that Winona Ryder had to get you that story on the phone with Johnny Depp that she can’t spit it out somehow, or, I mean, you’ve got Cher in the next trailer. “
“I know, we should have run there,” said Ricci.
