India Cadet World Wrestling Championship 2022 ends with record medal tally, earn praise from PM Modi

As India is having a stellar time in the Commonwealth Games, already ensuring eight medals in the event so far. However, in another international event, India has made a record of its own. In the Cadet Under-17 World Wrestling Championships, India has won a total of 14 medals, which is a record for the country in the history of the competition.

Of the 14 gold medals, seven were gold medals and five gold medals were won by the country’s women wrestlers. India also won one silver medal and six bronze medals. However, the biggest moment in the competition came in the hands of wrestler Suraj Vashisht. He became the first Indian wrestler after 32 years to win a gold medal in the Greco-Roman category.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate India for the historic achievement at the Cadet World Wrestling Championships.

India Also on top. Medal tally. Congratulations to our contingent,” tweeted the Prime Minister.

Ritika and Priya were the first freestyle gold medalists for India at the competition this year, as they won the top prize in the 43kg and 73kg categories respectively. Muskan, Savita and Harshita were the other women’s gold medalists in the competition, winning top prizes in the 40, 61 and 69 kg categories respectively.

Sachin Mor was the last India to win a gold medal in the men’s 48kg category. Apart from Suraj Vashisht, Ronit Sharma also won a silver medal in the Greco-Roman category. Indian wrestlers who won bronze medals in the competition were Lalit Kumar, Vaibhav Patil, Ankit, Manish, Shruti and Jaspuran Singh.
