Indian woman lifter Mirabai Chanu has successfully won a gold medal for India, while Indian weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar won silver in men’s 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday. The 21-year-old, who hails from Sangli in Maharashtra, lifted a total of 248kg (113kg in snatch and 135kg in clean and jerk) to open India’s account in the ongoing multi-nation event. Meanwhile, Bindyarani Devi also managed to clinch a silver medal in the 55kg women’s weightlifting category in the later part of the second day.
The Indian shuttlers, peddlers and squash players who put on a stellar performance on the first day of the event will be in action again on the second day as well. The Indian women’s table tennis team defeated Guyana in the morning session and then played in the quarterfinals against Malaysia in the evening where they lost in a very close fight. The men’s team faced Northern Ireland and made a clean sweep in the group, winning both their previous matches.
Anahata Singh and Abhay Singh, 14, lost their valiant fights in their respective squash events today. Saurav Ghosal, however, comfortably surpassed his opponent.
The Indian women’s hockey team, which thrashed Ghana 5-0 in their opening game, took on Wales tonight and sealed another victory (3-1).
