Greco and Lee compete in the World Rowing Championships

Waris, Italy — Duke Rowing Sofia Greco And Megan Lee Competed internationally last week. The two Blue Devils represented the United States at the 2022 World Rowing Under 19 and Under 23 Championships, which were held from July 25–31 on Lake Varese in Varese, Italy.

Greco, an up-and-coming freshman, was a member of the US Coxed Four and helped his crew set new records on their way to gold medals in both the heat and the final. During the early heat, America led from start to finish, setting a new world championship best time of 6:54.50 and finishing almost six seconds ahead of the competition. In the final, the US claimed the lead in the first 500 metres, and never gave up on it on its way to winning the gold medal. For the second consecutive race, the Americans set a new world championship best time of 6:52.84.

At the U23 level, Lee competed in the women’s pair division. A fourth-place finish in the opening race with a time of 7:20.23 placed America in the first repechage race. The Americans missed out on a place in the A final during the repechage event, finishing third with a time of 7:21.66 to advance to the B final. Lee and his crewmate finished second in the B final with a time of 7:14.61, only two seconds behind the eventual winner.

The World Rowing Championships is considered the top event for U23 and U19 rowers, drawing up to 1,000 rowers from all over the world.
