Actress Anne Heche, former partner of Ellen DeGeneres, was seriously injured in a car accident in Los Angeles on Friday morning.
Heche’s Mini Cooper hit a curb and hit a house in the Mar Vista neighborhood on LA’s west side at about 11 a.m. and set the house on fire, multiple local sources report. She suffered severe burns and was taken to the hospital Los Angeles Times. Heche, 53, appeared to be “under the influence” and “acting inappropriately,” LA Fire Department officials told the paper.
It took firefighters more than an hour to douse the fire. The landlord was in the backyard and escaped injury.
Heche and DeGeneres were together from 1997 to 2000 and were a high-profile couple. They appeared together on Oprah Winfrey’s show and many others. Their breakup was very public, amid reports that Heche wandered down a street in central California and ran into a stranger’s house. The couple released a statement describing their parting as “amicable”. Heche later said that being in a gay romance paid a price for his work in Hollywood, but he was “proud to be part of a revolution that created social change.”
